IRISH COMPANY INVESTS IN LATEST SLIDING-HEAD LATHE TECHNOLOGY

Galway precision engineering firm, Caragh, (www.caragh.ie) has purchased its second Traub CNC sliding-head lathe to strengthen its position in medical device component supply.

The first machine, a TNL12, was installed in 1998 to meet the growth in Ireland of the manufacture of healthcare products. It also coincided with the establishment of Caragh Meditech to provide machining services and turnkey manufacturing solutions to medical device OEMs.

"The [Kingsbury] TNL26/32 extends our capability to machine parts in the 14 to 32 mm diameter range in one hit, which is a key element of our lean manufacturing policy..."
– Pat Ryan, Engineering Manager

The purchase of the second Traub, a TNL26/32 supplied by sole UK and Eire agent, Geo Kingsbury Machine Tools, was based on the proven advantages of single set-up machining to produce high quality components cost effectively.

Pat Ryan, Caragh Tool & Die's engineering manager enthused, "The TNL26/32 extends our capability to machine parts in the 14 to 32 mm diameter range in one hit, which is a key element of our lean manufacturing policy.

"The TNL sliding-head machines have 13 CNC axes including C-axis on the main and opposed spindles. With two turrets and both front and reverse end working attachments, this allows us to manufacture short runs of complex, accurate components that previously would have been uneconomic."

Caragh Tool & Die was established in 1983 and operates from a 2,000 m2 factory employing around 70 people. At the outset, the company was a subcontract supplier of jigs, fixtures and tooling to the growing number of multinationals in the region, but later expanded its activities into the component supply business. Today, output from the Galway plant is split 30/70 between tooling and components, which it supplies to an international customer base in the automotive/transport and information technology industries as well as to the healthcare sector.

Mr Ryan commented, "I purchased the TNL26/32 based on the excellent performance of the TNL12. During five years of use, it has proven itself to be easily set-up on a variety of work and has been extremely reliable. Traub sliding-head machines have been an excellent investment for Caragh and we look forward to the continuation of this partnership.”
